The Township of Cavan Monaghan is urging residents to remain vigilant and take precautions in response to the recent ice storm that has caused significant damage across the community. Icy conditions have resulted in downed trees, damaged power lines, and hazardous roads.
Residents are advised to:
- Stay clear of downed power lines and trees. Treat all wires as live and dangerous.
- Avoid wooded areas and parks where falling branches or ice may pose a risk.
- Use flashlights instead of candles to prevent fire hazards during power outages.
- If you are using a generator only use approved electrical connections and hookups. Always make sure the generator is off while refueling.
- Never run a generator or a barbeque inside a building or garage.
- Avoid "Do It Yourself" tree trimming; it can be dangerous. Hire professionals for tree work. Proper protective equipment is essential but cannot replace skill and experience.

The Ganaraska Forest and all GRCA properties are temporarily closed, due to the weekend ice storm. Ice accumulation and expected high winds on Mar. 31, 2025, can present a serious hazard to the public from falling trees and limbs. For your safety, please do not visit the Ganaraska Forest or GRCA Conservation Areas at this time.
