Storm Update - April 7, 2025

In response to the on-going clean up following the ice storm over the weekend, the Township of Cavan Monaghan has prepared the following resources for residents:

Power Outage Information:

Hydro One crews are actively working to restore power and assess the situation across affected areas. For the latest outage updates, visit the Hydro One Storm Centre or view the Hydro One Outage Map. You may also call 1-800-434-1235 for more information.
Cavan Monaghan Township Emergency Control Group members continue to ensure that all critical emergency services and infrastructure remains operational.

Warming Room/Shower Facilities and Access to Power:

Please be advised, the Cavan Monaghan Community Centre at 986 County Road 10 is open until 9:00 p.m. is available for residents and families of the Township in need of a warming room, shower facilities and/or access to power to charge communication devices. Please check in at the reception desk for access to a change room with shower facilities.
The Municipal Office is open until 4:00 p.m. for residents needing access to internet and/or power to charge devices.

Brush and Limb Disposal:

Clearing debris from roads and creating safe passageway on roads continues to be a priority for Public Works Staff. If you encounter any fallen trees/branches or general debris on the roads please contact the Public Works Department at 705-932-2929.
Residents can drop off brush and limbs from personal property at the County of Peterborough Millbrook Depot at 1111 County Road 10 between April 2nd and April 14th, 2025. There are no diameter limits on branches. Please place brush in designated areas and follow signage
County Residents can drop off brush and wood from personal property at the Peterborough Waste Management Facility (Landfill) at 1260 Bensfort Road. They are temporarily accepting residential brush and wood waste free of charge. Fees on residential brush and wood waste will be waived until April 14, 2025. This applies to residential brush and wood waste only and does not include commercial loads. Extended hours will be available at Peterborough Landfill, April 8 to 12 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily to support storm cleanup efforts.
An extra Leaf & Yard Waste collection is scheduled for the week of April 7. Please have brush bundled in 3 foot lengths, with each bundle weighing no more than 30 lbs, and leaves/twigs in paper leaf bags to the curb on Monday at 7:00 a.m. No Plastic Bags Please. Yard waste in reusable bins will be accepted along with brown paper bags as long as there is no mixed garbage with it. Please limit branches to 2 inches in diameter maximum, larger diameter branches/limbs will need to be brought to a drop off point listed above. Regularly scheduled Leaf & Yard Waste spring program begins the week of April 28.

Household Waste Disposal:

County Residents can drop off spoiled food waste for free for composting at the Peterborough Waste Management Facility (Landfill) at 1260 Bensfort Road. They are temporarily waiving fees on this material until April 14, 2025. To ensure proper composting, residents are encouraged to separate food from its packaging before disposal.
Regular Curbside Collection will continue as scheduled. Excess bags over the limit can be brought to the Transfer Station.
Transfer Station will be open Friday April 4th through to Tuesday April 8th from 9:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m. Garbage bag user fees will be waived temporarily for disposal of spoiled food.
Brush and limb waste will not be accepted at the Transfer Station. Please take them to the Millbrook Depot as noted above.
Molok units are available on-site for food waste.
Do not place packaging material into the Molok units on site.
Please ensure no packaging material is placed in the curbside kitchen organic bins. Any spoiled food unable to be separated from the packaging material should be disposed of in the household garbage waste stream.
Please continue to separate garbage into clear garbage bags and place in appropriate bins.

Flood Warning Updates

A Flood Warning was issued Friday April 4th for this region and is in effect until Thursday April 10th, 2025, unless up-dated earlier.
Road closures: The following roads have been closed due to flooding

Bartlett Road between County Road 11 (Airport Road) and 1356 Bartlett Road
Fire Routes 9 and 970
Hooten Drive.

The Peterborough Wastewater Treatment Plant is currently experiencing a partial bypass, with partially treated effluent being discharged into the Otonabee River after going through primary treatment and disinfection. Residents downstream of the City of Peterborough who draw water from the Otonabee River are advised to take necessary precautions. Homes and businesses connected to municipal water from the Township of Cavan Monaghan drinking water system are not affected and their water continues to be safe to drink.

The Township of Cavan Monaghan is urging residents to remain vigilant and take precautions in response to the recent ice storm that has caused significant damage across the community. Icy conditions have resulted in downed trees, damaged power lines, and hazardous roads.

Residents are advised to:

Stay clear of downed power lines and trees. Treat all wires as live and dangerous.
Avoid wooded areas and parks where falling branches or ice may pose a risk.
Use flashlights instead of candles to prevent fire hazards during power outages.
If you are using a generator only use approved electrical connections and hookups. Always make sure the generator is off while refueling.
Never run a generator or a barbeque inside a building or garage.
Avoid "Do It Yourself" tree trimming; it can be dangerous. Hire professionals for tree work. Proper protective equipment is essential but cannot replace skill and experience.
The Ganaraska Forest and all GRCA properties are temporarily closed, due to the weekend ice storm. Ice accumulation and expected high winds on Mar. 31, 2025, can present a serious hazard to the public from falling trees and limbs. For your safety, please do not visit the Ganaraska Forest or GRCA Conservation Areas at this time.
