Road Safety

Over the last few years, Staff and Council have received requests from residents to adjust speed limits in their respective neighbourhoods to prevent safety hazards and offer protection for children, pedestrians, and cyclists using the road.

Staff conducted a series of day traffic speed studies on select roads throughout the Township and presented the results to Council at the October 3, 2022, Council Meeting. Staff also consulted with Peterborough Police who supported the recommended changes noting that speed reduction is a proven initiative to reduce collisions.

Council approved Traffic and Parking By-law No. 2022-65 regulating traffic and parking within the limits of the Township of Cavan Monaghan.  The following speed reduction requests were approved as part of that by-law:

  • Morton Line be reduced from 80 km/hr to 60 km/hr between County Road 10 to 500 meters westerly of Highway 7
  • Fallis Line be reduced from 60 km/hr to 50 km/hr between County Road 10 and Tapley ¼ Line;
  • Zion Line be reduced from 80 km/hr to 60 km/hr between County Road 10 and 800 meters westerly of County Road 28;
  • Stewart Line be reduced from 80 km/hr to 60 km/hr between Dranoel Road and 700 meters west of County Road 10;
  • Syer Line be reduced from 80 km/hr to 60 km/hr between County Road 10 and County Road 28;
  • Bland Line be reduced from 80 km/hr to 60 km/hr between County Road 10 and westerly limit.

Speeding and aggressive driving put your life and the lives of others in danger.  Dangerous driving behaviours are criminal offences under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).   Fines for driving over the posted speed limit are available on the Provincial website.

If speeding is a problem on your road you can report your concerns to Peterborough Police through the non-emergency line: 705-876-1122 or online through their website: A Non-Emergency Crime - Peterborough Police
