The Township of Cavan Monaghan adopted its first Accessibility Plan in 2003.
The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA) was passed in June 2005. Its purpose is to achieve accessibility for Ontarians with disabilities by January 1, 2025. The AODA has a broad application in both the public and private sectors. Under the AODA, accessibility standards will be developed in the following areas:
- Customer Service
- Information and Communications
- Built Environment, and
The Accessibility Standards for Customer Service Regulation was passed and municipalities were required to comply with this first Standard by January 1, 2010. The Township of Cavan Monaghan developed Customer Service policies, practices and procedures in addition to training all staff as well as requiring all third party service providers to review the Township's Customer Services training literature 'Understanding Accessible Customer Service".
The Township of Cavan Monaghan has a commitment to:
- Understand and identify the different types of disabilities within the municipality and the barriers they face.
- Review all facilities to determine the current level of accessibility of municipal facilities. Make a strategy to make the facilities fully accessible.
- Review by-laws, policies, programs and business practices and to continually consider the needs of the residents and determine how these needs are going to be addressed.

The Township continues to update policies and procedures and train staff in accordance with new regulations under the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA).
